IDF preparing for renewed disturbances in wake of PA minister's death
Investigation of circumstances surrounding the incident still in early stages
A senior IDF officer said today that the army is preparing for a possible renewal of violent disturbances in the West Bank, following the death of Zaid Abu Ein, a Palestinian Authority minister who died during a confrontation with Israeli security forces near Ramallah.
PA officials also threatened to cease security cooperation with Israel, though IDF officials stated there is no such intention.Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon said the incident is being investigated by the IDF. "We express our sorrow for his death", he said. "We have offered the PA to conduct a joint investigation. Stability is important to both sides and we will continue our dialogue with the PA." It is also reported that an autopsy will be performed at the Abu Kabir Forensic institute by Israeli and Jordanian pathologists.
The Palestinians claim the minister died because of inhaling large amounts of tear gas. The IDF, however, says it was apparently a heart attack, and that Abu Ein was probably startled by the noise of shock grenades.
The PA declared three days of national mourning. Shortly after the incident, PA chairman Abu Mazen said: "This cruel attack which led to a freedom fighter's death is barbaric and unacceptable." At the same time, riots began in Kalandia.
